The ongoing situation is under constant scrutiny, and currently, there is no necessity for imposing any restrictions on the movement and congregation of people. The government will release an advisory accordingly, he mentioned.

Madikeri: In response to the detection of a case of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 in neighboring Kerala, the Karnataka government has issued a directive on Monday. Individuals aged 60 and above, with comorbidities, and experiencing symptoms such as cough, phlegm, and fever, are now required to wear face masks as a precautionary measure.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao informed reporters that officials have been directed to implement increased testing for individuals displaying symptoms and those suspected of having the virus. Additionally, heightened surveillance measures are to be undertaken in border districts as part of the comprehensive strategy to manage the situation.

He reassured that the ongoing situation is under constant surveillance, and at present, there is no necessity for imposing restrictions on the movement or gatherings of people. He further stated that the government plans to release an advisory to provide guidance on the matter.

“There is no cause for concern. We convened a meeting two days ago, and our technical advisory committee, led by Dr. (K) Ravi, held discussions with officials and experts yesterday. The deliberations focused on determining the necessary measures to address the situation,” stated Mr. Rao.

Individuals aged 60 and above, as well as those with underlying health conditions such as heart and kidney issues, along with symptoms like cough, phlegm, and fever, are required to wear masks without exception. This information is being disseminated to the public, and we have instructed our healthcare facilities to be ready. Additionally, heightened surveillance is imperative in border districts such as Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, and Chamarajanagara, which are adjacent to Kerala.

The government will assess the situation and determine the necessary additional measures, according to the official. In addition to enhancing border surveillance, directives have been given to intensify testing efforts, with individuals displaying symptoms or deemed suspicious being mandated to undergo testing.

“We will have clarity on the trend of infections in the next few days. As we ramp up COVID testing, should there be a surge in positive cases, we will assess and determine any necessary additional measures. At this point, there is no immediate requirement to impose any restrictions or curbs,” stated Mr. Rao.

Regarding the return of Ayyappa pilgrims from Kerala, Rao stated that currently, there are no limitations or restrictions on the movement of people and gatherings.

As of now, Rao affirmed that there are no restrictions or constraints on the movement and assembly of Ayyappa pilgrims returning from Kerala.

“We will assess the situation on a daily basis, and if any concerning information arises, we will provide appropriate guidance. For individuals aged 60 and above, those with comorbidities, and respiratory conditions, the use of masks is advisable. We will enforce this as a mandatory measure, and the government will release an advisory today.”

Observing that district health officials have executed a simulated drill across all hospitals to assess their readiness, the Minister remarked that evaluations have been carried out regarding essential emergency resources. This includes inspections of bed capacity, ventilators, oxygen supply, masks, testing equipment, and PPE kits.

Mr. Rao emphasized the issuance of directives to ensure essential preparations are undertaken at all health centers, as well as taluk and district hospitals.
